40 years ago on March 4th 1979 the first walk of Burton Fellwalkers was held. This year the same walk was followed.

13 members left the hard working organisers to prepare the tea, and parked at the top of Clawthorpe Road, opposite the gate to the fell. Heading North over Newbiggin Crags, we encountered a fine herd of White Park out-wintered cattle, which were quite unconcerned by our presence. Before reaching the end of Farleton Fell we descended to a stile over the boundary wall onto National Trust land.

After a couple of group photos, the sun came out and we enjoyed hazy views across the valley to the estuary. Soon we walked through another herd of cattle, Belted Galloways, which, thankfully, also chose to ignore us.

Joining the bridleway from Holme Park Farm we headed uphill, past hazels in full flower. At the top we entered a field of  Rough Fell sheep, before re-joining the track to the cars. With a darkening sky, we hurried to the cars, jumping in with or without boots, to avoid a heavy shower.

Photos of the tea to follow.

Coincidentally, this is the first walk to be added to the updated website. This is more user friendly for mobiles and tablets, but doesn't display all the old photos well, as they are of various sizes. The report is on the same page as the photos, thus replacing captions. A few hitches still need sorting.
